One of the most interesting spots we visited was the Museum of Science and Industry Christmas Around the World exhibit. Wait until you see these amazing decorations…

When I first started researching Chicago holiday events, one that kept showing up with rave reviews was the Museum of Science and Industry Christmas Around the World. I knew it would be a must-visit for us. Colton loves science experiments, and I love holiday decorations. It was a win-win.
The Museum of Science and Industry is a busy place, hence my terrible attempt at editing several people out of the background of the photo. Hey, I tried.
But seriously, that is a four-story Christmas tree. You can see it as you ride the escalator up to the Rotunda on Level 2 of MSI, and it’s such an impressive sight. Seeing it in person took my breath away. [By the way, if you’re not familiar with MSI, you can get your bearings using this map.]
Christmas Around the World also includes 50+ additional trees and displays showing holiday traditions from various cultures. It was a great learning experience, not to mention beautiful to look at.
Of course, there’s plenty to do at Museum of Science and Industry besides the holiday decor! My kids especially loved the Science Storms area on Level 2.
Colton also enjoyed The Great Train Story, particularly this miniature exhibit of Chicago–complete with drawbridges just like the ones we saw from our hotel!
I’ve always loved air travel, so my favorite exhibit was 727 Take Flight. We got to go inside an actual 727! Colton is on a bit of an airplane kick right now too, so he enjoyed it as well. You could even peek inside the airplane bathroom [he was amazed how tiny it was!] and underneath to see the area where luggage is stowed.
Another exhibit that was popular with my family was YOU! The Experience, located on Level 3. Jon and Colton spent a long time playing a mind game where you put sensors on your forehead and had to basically relax your brain to make a ball move back and forth. Very interesting!
When you’re visiting the Museum of Science and Industry, keep their hours in mind. Most days are 9:30am-4:00pm, which means you’ll want to visit early in the day if possible. You could easily spend an entire day here, especially if you do some of the tours and special exhibits.
